Subtracting Across Zeros Worksheets

Subtracting across zeros, as in 400 − 127 or 3,005 − 1,268, is the trickiest kind of regrouping. Students have to borrow from a place that is itself zero.

What's on this worksheet

Three- and four-digit starting numbers with a zero in the tens place (and sometimes the hundreds), where the ones column needs regrouping. Each sheet comes with an answer key on a separate page.

Teaching tips

  • Show 400 as 40 tens: take 1 ten to leave 39 tens and 10 ones. Many students find this easier than borrowing twice.
  • Another approach is to subtract 1 from both numbers first: 400 − 127 is the same as 399 − 126, which needs no regrouping.
