How these UK worksheets work

These worksheets follow the National Curriculum for England, from number bonds in Year 1 to long division in Year 6. They print on A4 paper by default, use maths and colour rather than math and color, and name the methods the way UK teachers do: column addition, exchanging, short and long multiplication, and short division with the bus stop method.

Australian classrooms use the same words and paper size, so the sheets suit Australian pupils too. Note that year groups are not quite the same: in England, Year 3 pupils are 7 to 8 years old, while in Australia Year 3 pupils are usually 8 to 9. Pick the worksheet by the skill rather than the year.

Questions

What is the bus stop method?

It is the UK name for short division. The number being divided sits under a bracket that looks like a bus shelter, the divisor waits outside, and remainders are carried to the next digit.

What is the multiplication tables check?

The multiplication tables check (MTC) is taken by Year 4 pupils in England every June: 25 times tables questions on screen, with 6 seconds to answer each one.

What does exchanging mean?

Exchanging is the UK word for regrouping or carrying: 10 ones are exchanged for 1 ten, or 1 ten for 10 ones when subtracting.
